In our social studies lesson today we wrapped up our conversation on “cooperation.” As an activity to help students better understand this concept, we had students partner up. In pairs they had to sit on the floor with their backs to each other. When sitting they had to lock elbows. When I said go, they had to stand up while keeping their elbows locked. After our first try, there was only one group that was able to make it up while keeping their elbows locked together. We then talked about how it felt when trying to do it on our own instead of cooperating together to stand up. I gave them some suggestions and then we tried it again. After the suggestions, many more students were able to cooperate and stand up. The kids were really able to understand what cooperation means and how it can help us get along.
